The Winneba Youth Choir (WYC), a renowned Ghanaian Christian choral institution from the central region, marked its remarkable 35-year journey with an unforgettable celebration at the Aseda Concert held at the Labadi Beach Hotel.

Proudly sponsored by Fidelity Bank, the event was a heartfelt expression of gratitude for divine blessings and unwavering support of their patrons who have accompanied the choir since May 1989.

The Aseda Concert was an evening filled with soul-stirring melodies and earnest reflections, transcending mere celebration to serve as a platform for raising funds for impactful initiatives.

Proceeds from the concert will be directed towards two critical endeavors: acquiring a dedicated bus to facilitate the choir’s performances and outreach programs, and upgrading sound equipment to maintain their signature sound and uphold choral excellence.

The event commenced with a heartfelt welcome address delivered by the WYC’s board chair, Mr. Edusei Derkyi. He highlighted the Easter occasion and the choir’s appreciation for patrons’ continued support over 35 years.

He extended special gratitude to Mr Edward Effah, a banker, music enthusiast, and founder of Fidelity Bank, as the guest of honour. Mr. Derkyi expressed gratitude for Fidelity Bank’s sponsorship and Mr. Effah’s contributions to the choir’s success.

“In commemorating 35 years of excellence, we express gratitude to our cherished patrons whose support has propelled the choir to greater heights,” remarked Mr. Derkyi.

“We are honoured to welcome Mr. Edward Effah as our guest of honour, whose visionary leadership and commitment to the arts have been instrumental in organizing this event and our journey.”

The address further emphasized the choir’s achievements in raising the standard of singing in Ghana.  Mr Derkyi proudly noted that Ghana has become a significant contributor to the World Youth Choir Initiative, with five Ghanaians securing coveted spots this year.  He also highlighted the choir’s impact on West Africa through its role as a founding member of the African Federation for Choral Music.

“Through the support of our patrons, the Winneba Youth Choir has become a beacon of excellence in choral music, both locally and internationally. Our participation in the World Youth Choir initiative and a historic performance in Saudi Arabia in 2023 underscores our commitment to raising the standard of singing in Ghana.”

The event was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including the Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Lawyer Sam Okudzeto, and Mr. Phil Philips, representative of the Barbarian Ambassador.

Fidelity Bank’s Director of Marketing, Esi Mills-Robertson, expressed admiration for the Winneba Youth Choir’s remarkable accomplishments spanning 35 years.

“Fidelity Bank is deeply impressed by the Winneba Youth Choir’s exemplary achievements over their 35-year journey,” said Ms. Mills-Robertson. “Their dedication and talent serve as a true inspiration. Tonight’s performance is a powerful reminder that by investing in and supporting initiatives that elevate Ghana’s image, we can build a society filled with pride”. She added, “Fidelity Bank remains committed to fostering partnerships with organizations like the Winneba Youth Choir who contribute significantly to our nation’s cultural landscape.”

“The overwhelming support we received at the event has been incredibly motivating,” said Choirmaster John Francis Arthur Yamoah. “This outpouring of encouragement propels us forward with renewed confidence and spirited enthusiasm, especially as we embark on a similar and exciting concert that will be held in Winneba to climax this milestone. We remain steadfast in our mission of promoting choral excellence and cultural diplomacy on the global stage.”

Mr. Yamoah further added, “We are deeply grateful for the support of our patrons, especially His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, our esteemed Chief Patron, and a true livewire of this choir.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to former President John Agyekum Kuffuor, and dedicated partners like Fidelity Bank, all of whom have played a vital role in sustaining the Winneba Youth Choir for over three and a half decades.  With their continued support, we look forward to a future filled with continued success and impactful contributions to the Ghanaian and international arts and culture landscape.”
