Hosts Mexico made a winning start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament opener at the iconic Azteca Stadium.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, ‘El Tricolor’ took control of the contest and found the breakthrough in the first half through Julian Quiñones, who gave the hosts a deserved lead.
Mexico continued to dominate after the break and doubled their advantage when experienced striker Raul Jimenez found the back of the net to put the result beyond doubt.
The match, however, was overshadowed by a flurry of red cards in the second half as tempers flared on the pitch.
South Africa were reduced to nine men after Siphephelo Sithole and substitute Themba Zwane were both sent off, while Mexico captain Cesar Montes also received his marching orders as the game became increasingly physical.
Despite finishing with ten men, Mexico comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to secure all three points and move to the top of their group.
The victory gives the hosts a strong platform heading into their next fixture against South Korea on June 19.
The Bafana Bafanas, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they face the Czech Republic on June 18 in a crucial second group match.
